Hi, I am Chanchala Halder, I am born in Dhanpota and am 12 years old. I am the oldest in my family and I have a brother and sister. Everyday I walk about one mile to come to school. My daddy is Shymal Halder. He is mason and helped to build the Marudyan School. I like my daddy very much, because he is very kind to me and helps me get things for my schoolwork.
I am studying in class 8. For fun I like skipping rope and running. When on sportsday I win a prize that makes me very happy.
I rate 3rd in my class and I would like to continue my studies. When I grow up I want become a medical doctor as I would like to help sick people and take care of them with medicine or however I can.
Namashkar, I am Sumitra Mondal. I was born in Sarbanandapur 14 years ago. This village is 3 kilometers from the school and daily I come on my bicycle. I have 2 older brothers and one older sister they did not go to school and they don’t know how to read and write. One brother works in a factory and the other one as a cook.
We live in a house made of mud and my mother keeps house.
My daddy’s name is Puli Mondal and he works in the field as a day labourer. He earns 80 rupees per day. My daddy wants me to go to school so I can learn. I would like to become a teacher so I can help teach little children to read and write as this is important. Although there is a school closer to my house I like coming to Marudyan school, because the surroundings are peaceful and the teachers are good.
I like sportsday and I participate in the balance race. I enjoy it very much when we all are having fun together.
I am Pallab Mondal and am 12 years old. I study in class 8. I have come to the school ever since I am a little boy. I have one younger brother of 7 years and he also studies in the school. My father is Sanjay Mondal and he is a history teacher at the school.
I get along very well with my family. We have a big family, my grandparents and my daddy’s 3 brothers, 2 are married and one is single. I have 4 cousins and I get along well with them. I like being with my family because there is always something to do and we take care of each other. I am the top student in my class and I would like to become an English teacher. I like cricket and table tennis or ping pong. I want to ask if we can set up a ping pong table in the community hall of the school then I can learn to play better.

I am Monisha Naskar and am 12 years old. I live in Dhanpota and my daddy is Ratan Naskar. He is security guard at the school.
I study in class 8. I have one older sister and one younger sister. I like to play especially the game musical chairs. On sports day I won the first prize with that game.
I live in a mud-house and the walls are thick. In the walls live snakes. They have a hole next to the wall and have their nest in the wall and under the ground. The holes are made by rats and they live there until the snakes come in and take over the nest. The snakes are called Dharas, they are grey coloured and are harmless.
I want to become a nurse or a doctor as I would like to help orphan boys and girls that have no parents.
My name is Mamoni Chaatui. I was born in Dhanpota 14 years ago. I live 15 minutes walk from the school and I study in class 8. My older sister is 18. She is married and has a little baby girl. She lives with her husband and his parents. Girls usually after they marry go and live with their in-law family. I like village life and when I grow up I would like to stay in the village. I also like drawing very much but have no teacher that can teach me art. One other thing that I like and is fun for me is the game musical chairs that we play on sports days.
My daddy is Bablu Chaatui. He sells fruits in Kolkata. He takes every day the 4 o’clock train in the morning. He collects his fruits from the market and sells them in Kolkata. He returns by 4 o’clock in the afternoon. By then he is usually very tired and needs to sleep. So I am closer to my mummy, but I love both my parents very much.
I would like to become a nurse to help old people and people that are sick.

My daddy is Subal Naskar and he is presently very sick with Tuberculosis- He is in the hospital in Baruipur – it is called Kitham Khola Mission- This is a Christian mission where he gets free treatment. The hospital is quarantined and we can visit papa only once a week.
I want to become a nurse when I finish school and I would like to ask the school if we can start a vocational training course for nursing.
My name is Shuleka Chakraborty. 3 years ago I finished 8th grade in Marudyan school, where I passed as best student of my class. I did my 9th and 10th standard in Morapai St. Patricks High School. We are 3 brothers and 3 sisters. My older sisters are married one has 1 child and the other has 2 children. Our family lives in a mud-house.
My father is Krishnachandra Chakraborty and he used to ride a cycle-van (this is a bicycle with carrier that can carry goods or people). My father is 60, he is just recovering from tuberculosis so he is now physically not capable to do this work. For me to continue my studies in 11th and 12th grade I need to pay 1400 rupees to Mallavpur Adarsha Vidya Mandir School for admission charge, but we don’t have the money.
At present I am learning to sew at the Marudyan Vocational Training Centre, so I can earn some money.
I would very much like to finish my studies and become a teacher. My parents would like me to finish my studies, but cannot afford to pay for me. I humbly request Calcutta Marudyan to help pay for my studies.
(Calcutta Marudyan has paid her admission fee and has bought a set of school study books for her to use. These books will remain property of the society and are to be returned when her studies are finished)
“My name is Chandana Halder, I am 17 years old and I have 4 brothers and 1 older sister. My sister is married and has a little baby girl. My father’s name is Prankrishna Halder, he is a day labourer and works in the rice or ‘paddy’ fields as we call them. When he works a full day he earns about Rs 110.-. We live in a house made of mud as these are cheap to build. They are made out of bamboo and mud.
I have studied from KG upto class 8 in Marudyan School. Now I have been admitted in a different school to study in class 11, but due to financial difficulties my parents cannot afford to buy the schoolbooks that I need.
I sincerely request Calcutta Marudyan to help me in this matter, so I can continue my studies, as I would like to become a teacher. I enjoy children and for this reason I would like to become a teacher."
(Calcutta Marudyan has decided to buy a set of school study books for Chandana to use. These books will remain property of the society and are to be returned in good condition when her studies are finished)
