As a charity Calcutta Marudyan's main objective is to bring sponsored education to the children of underprivileged rural and urban families and give sponsored vocational training for older students and adults to improve the standard of living and to alleviate poverty, regardless of religion, caste or ethnic background.
 In the year 1998 we formed with active local boardmembers the 'MARUDYAN' society (Oasis in Bengali), later renamed Calcutta Marudyan by the Registrar or Societies. We are a small energetic society working at grassroot level with very little overhead.

Our project in Dhanpota, West Bengal started in  1999 in a rice-shed with 150 children.
It is now in 2011-12 an educational institute with 552 students. (Experience some of the class 7 students' life stories in the 'Life Stories' directory)
As of July 1st 2010 we opened 'Marudyan Learning Centre' in Devilal Colony in Gurgaon. Devilal is a migrant area where 2/3 of the families are BPL (Below Poverty Line). Although we started with 15 children, within 5 weeks we passed the 100 mark. At present we have 182 children, mainly from rag-picking families.
Since June 2011 we have opened a small Marudyan Learning Centre near the trainstation in old Gurgaon, where we have 28 children
